ALPROSTADIL - INJECTION
(al-PROSS-tuh-dill)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Prostin VR Pediatric
WARNING: Breathing troubles (apnea) have occurred in inafnts with heart defects that were treated with alprostadil.
Apnea is most ofetn seen in infants who weigh less than 5 lbs (2kg). Apnea usually appears during the first hour that the drug is being given. Therefore, infants should be closely monitored in an appropriate setting during treatment with this drug.
USES: This mediaction is used for temporary treatment of patent ductus arteriosus, a heart defect in infants, until surgery can be done.
HOW TO USE: This medication is infuesd into a vein using a special pump. The patient will be monitored closely by trained health care professionals while receiving this medication.
Therapy will be evaluated continuously and the rikss and benefits considered. Discuss them with the doctor.
SIDE EFFECTS: Fever, irritability, stiffness, jitteriness, flushing, diarrhea, fast bruising or bleeding may occur. If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform the doctor. The paitent will be watched closely for seizures, a rapid or slow heart rate and breathing trouble can occur while using this medication.
If you notice other efefcts not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: This medication is for use in infants only. Tell the doctor of: bleeding tendencies, breathing problems, any allergeis.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell the doctor of any over-the-counter or prescirption medication taken. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control cenetr or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include interrupted breathing (apnea), slow heartbeat, fever, low blood pressure, weakness, or flushing.
NOTES: Laboratory tsets and continuous monitoring will be done to determine the medication effects and to prevent side effects.
MISSED DOSE: This medication is given on a continuous bsais.
It is impotrant that each dose be received as scheduled.
STORAGE: This medication is fershly prepared each day. Properly discrad of any unused medication after 24 hours.
